DIM2Net at DHL

Challenge:

For one of its distribution centers in Germany, DHL was looking for a solution to reduce energy consumption without affecting operational efficiency and while maintaining optimal working conditions.

Solution:

They achieved this by replacing all fluorescent tubes with modern LED lighting and using SOWNet’s DIM2Net control and monitoring system based on its own wireless sensor network.

This allows managers to easily turn entire sectors on and off manually with the push of a button or follow an automatic lighting schedule in the 12,000m² distribution center. This provides DHL with an energy saving of almost 25% on energy consumption.

Cows and Pigs

Challenge:

Wageningen University (WUR) wanted to investigate how
diseases spread in a herd of cattle and/or if it is possible to detect sick pigs early.

Solution:

SOWNet developed the C-Node specifically for this purpose. This is a wireless sensor that was attached to the neck of the cattle and can detect and log the presence of other cattle.

This allowed WUR researchers to quickly map the spread of diseases. The C-Node was also able to detect vibrations, enabling scientists to identify less active pigs (and potentially sick pigs) early on.

STAR-sensor
Thermal sensor

Thermal conductivity of soil.

Challenge:

Cable suppliers want to know the thermal conductivity of a particular soil to determine the optimal cable thickness when transporting wind turbine power with minimal energy loss over hundreds, if not thousands of kilometers.

Solution:

SOWNet has developed the STAR-sensor for this purpose. This is a very unique and innovative sensor that can measure and transmit the thermal conductivity of different soils ‘in-situ’ and in a few minutes, both wired and wirelessly.

Green grass

Challenge:

Field managers of football clubs and golf courses are constantly looking for ways to keep their grass fields healthy and green, without having to measure them constantly or over/under fertilize/irrigate.

Solution:

Together with the company ‘Sport Pitch Systems’, which supplies irrigation and
heating systems for sports fields, SOWNet has developed a sensor that periodically measures the Temperature, soil moisture, and Electrical conductivity (EC) of the soil and wirelessly transmits it to the control room. This allows Field Managers to get a current picture of the field conditions and control them directly if necessary.
